I just moved to Bangkok and my western facing balcony has a wide open view of the Westin hotel about 1/4 mile away.
I have actually considered writing to you, Deirdre, to talk about some of the hotel and spa options in this city. From my experience Thailand gets you the best bang for buck in terms of luxury by far. I stayed in 5 different hotels here until settling into my apartment. Never stayed in the Westin but it looks quite nice. The best hotel from my experience was the Centre Point Q house on Soi Thong Lor (one of the 2 art centers of the city, the other being Silom, Thonglor being more contemporary). The one bedroom suite was fully serviced and funishings were beautiful. 4 rooms and huge marble bathroom, big balcony with two wooden chairs. Full dining room and kitchen. Amazing pool and facilities. All for $75 per night.
I didnt get a chance to get pampered at the spa there, but it looked top notch and the prices were really good.
Peter Conway: If you have some extra time in Bangkok and want to check out another spa other than the Westin offer...go to Ananda on Soi 11 attached to the President Solitaire hotel, it is a 10 minute walk from the Westin and a little hidden gem. 750 Baht($20 US) gets you an INCREDIBLE 60 minute Thai traditional massage in a private room (or 2 person shared room for you and a partner). Their atmosphere is wonderful and they have other extremely well priced services including scrubs, wraps, and the like. Book a day in advance.
I guess the only negative thing I have to say about Bangkok is they still have a bit to catch up on in terms of wine selection...but the frequent Austrailian visitors are helping to remedy that situation.
Enjoy your stay!
